Style and Decorate Your Bookshelf with These How To's

Style and Decorate Your Bookshelf with These How To's

Got a bookcase or built-in that needs a face-lift? Instead of removing potential storage from your home, give yours a makeover. Try these tips the next time you want to breathe fresh life into an old bookcase:

Decoupage
Refurbish the shelves of your bookcase with some simple decoupage. This project basically involves soaking printed paper, wrap, or tissue in a special decoupage glue, and adhering it to the wood. Allow to dry fully before replacing your belongings on the shelves.

Mirrored Tile
Line the back of your shelves with small mirrored tiles, with adhesive backs, which are widely found at crafting sites and stores. This will reflect attention to your items displayed on the bookcase's shelves, and will also make your room appear larger

Patterned Paper
Another great way to restore an old bookcase or built-in is with wallpaper or contact paper. Simply cover and trim the shelves, back, molding and even the sides for a fresh and appealing look. This is a great way to use up an extra roll of wallpaper after a home improvement project, plus it will coordinate with the walls of your room!

Paint
It is pretty amazing what a coat of paint can do; give your bookcase a new look with a distinctly different paint job. Sand the bookcase slightly before painting, especially if the surface is varnished or glossy. Try streaky white wash, which is basically white paint that is thinned with turpentine or water, to give a traditional bookcase a modern, chic look.

Whimsy
Bring a little whimsy to your bookcase and create a dollhouse or holiday village on the shelves. This is a fun project, particularly if you have little ones, and each shelf can serve as a level in your dollhouse or a row of houses for a Christmas village.

Accents
Use decorative nail-heads on the edges and trim of your bookcase to give it a new look. Find brass nail-heads or tacks, that gently press into wood or particle-board with ease.

Try this tips and pull your old bookcase out of storage to refurbish it or try a new arrangement on your new bookcase!
